U11A League Villa 3 Bohs 1
Our U11A team played hosts to our near neighbours Bohs last weekend in a top of the league clash in Connors Park. We played against a gale force wind in the first half and for most of the half we were second best to a Bohs team who were passing the ball well. Craig Brown and Greg Milne worked very hard during this period of pressure. We fell a goal behind with 10 mins to go in the first half and after this we started to improve with some good corners from Tommy Power and James Coad but we could not get a final touch. After the half time pep talk and aided by the very strong wind we dominated the 2nd half. Ryan Phillips was proving a major threat to the Bohs defence who could not handle his pace. Dylan McGuire was making some nice passes after coming on at half time. 10 mins into the 2nd half we got our deserved equaliser through a well taken Ryan Phillips goal. Aaron O' Connor and Adam Doyle both went close. A bad challenge on Stephen Doheny saw Bohs reduced to 10 players. Colin Barry replaced Stephen and was very impressive in the last 15 mins. Bohs defended stubbornly for remainder of the match but 2 poacher goals from Brian Cunningham left the final score 3-1 to the Villa. Overall a fine squad effort which keeps our unbeaten league record intact but we have to learn that a game is played over 60 mins. The U11A squad would like to wish Luke Power a speedy recovery from a recent hand injury.
U11C League Railway 1 Villa B 2
Saturday morning we made the long journey down to Cappoquin to face league leaders Railway Athletic in what was the lads first competitive match for nearly four months and what a match it proved to be with the Villa running out 2- 1 winners. Contrary to popular belief the break left us not with a team who were ring rusty but with a team who were chomping at the bit and it showed right from the off as the lads dominated the early stages of the game. The quality of the balls being put into the box was superb but on each occasion we failed to capitalise. The only blight was the injury to Adam McNamara after only five minutes which forced him off the pitch. It was nice though to see his replacement Daryl Hemmingway make his return after a long lay off with a serious injury.
We made the breakthrough after about 20 minutes when Luke Fitzgerald broke through from the midfield and unleashed an unstoppable shot from all of 25 yards which flew past the helpless keeper. We built on this and shortly afterwards Hayden Gallibert slotted the ball through the legs of the onrushing keeper.
The second half saw more of the same with Dylan Walsh going close with a header and several other chances going narrowly wide. We were awarded a penalty and the chance to kill off the game, for deliberate hand ball but failed to convert the kick. This seemed to give Railway a boost and they scored shortly after. The last five minutes of the game saw us defend for our lives and the lads at the back were superb. With two minutes left Railway broke through the defence and their forward prodded a goal bound shot past Aiden but Adam Doheny had come in from the right back position to cover behind his keeper and slid in to put the ball out of play and seal the victory.
Goal scorers : Luke Fitzgerald, Hayden Galibert
Best for Villa : Luke Fitzgerald
Premier League Villa 1 Johnville 1
We had the better of the possession in a scoreless first half but chances were at a premium. We made the perfect start to the second half when Eoin Ginnety scored after two minutes following good work from Paul Omatoso. Johnville came back at us and a superb goal-line clearance from Declan Furlong kept us ahead. Within minutes Johnville were level and despite a couple of chances we failed to score a winner.
Under 15 League Portlaw 0 Villa B 1
Having not played for three months this was a difficult game for the first one back to action. The only goal of the game came mid-way through the first half when a move involving Aaron Galibert, Barry Power and Kevin Flynn was finished by Stuart Quilty. We could have been further ahead at the break but it wasn't to be. The second half saw us battle hard to ensure we didn't concede and with the work rate we show throughout the team, we achieved a clean sheet and the three points. Barry Power in the midfield, Mark Hobbs at the back were excellent but special mention to Aaron Galibert, playing in an unfamiliar left full position who didn't put a foot wrong all day.
