U-11 League Villa v De La Salle Our U-11A team’s game was abandoned with 10 minutes remaining when one of the De La Salle players picked up a nasty injury. This was a cracking game with both sides giving everything to the cause. The first half saw us start quickly and dominate for long periods. We had the ball in the net after 5 minutes but it was harshly disallowed for a handball. We continued in this vain and played some of our best football of the season, with Evan O Donnell going close when put through. The second half saw the same pattern but we could not find a way past the visitors defence, with the visitor goalkeeper making one superb save to deny Niall McCabe. With 15 minutes remaining the visitors scored to lead. As we pressed forward with time running out, the De La Salle fullback picked up the injury and the referee abandoned the game to allow the proper medical attention to be given. We all wish the player concerned a speedy recovery and hope to see him back playing very soon. U15 SFAI National Cup Villa 2 Albion Rovers 2 (Villa won 7-6 on pens) Our U15 team progressed to the last 16 of the National Cup when they defeated a good Louth side last Saturday in Connors Park. This game started at a very high tempo with our boys having to work very hard to contain the visitors. Gradually we came more and more into the game and Kevin Feely opened the scoring when he got on the end of an excellent run from Jonathan McEvoy who used his pace to get past 3 Rovers defenders and Kevin was on hand to slot in a sideways pass from the Villa striker. Rovers did equalize late on in the game which brought it to extra time. Rovers scored early in the first half of extra time but we did not give up and eventually got our just rewards when Kevin Feely scored again this time from a corner from Brian McDonald. Overall this was a fine team performance with our defence of Andrew Baxter, Wayne Robinson, Tom O Brien and Adam Potter standing very firm and dealing with most of what Rovers had to throw at them. Reece Rooney was having a great game but unfortunately had to come off injured. We wish Reece a speedy recovery. Some very good play from our midfielders helped to create some chances for our forwards and on another day a couple of more goals could have been added. Our penalties were taken very well and we scored all five. Jack Gaule, Adam Potter, Jonathan McEvoy, Kevin Feely and Andrew Baxter were the penalty takers. Well done to our goalkeeper Figo who kept his nerve and saved the visitors 2nd penalty which has now sent us through to the last 16 where we will have an away fixture in a couple of week’s time.
Premier League Carrick 0 Villa 0
A good point against an in-form Carrick team. There were few enough chances throughout for either side and a draw was a fair result.
Youth League Villa 1 Southend 0
A goal from Tom Condon after 18 minutes separated the two teams. On the balance of play we deserved our victory. Special mention of Stephen Flynn on goal and Tadhg Kirby at centre back playing well out of position.
Manchester City Three of our U-13’s spend last training with Manchester City. Kenneth McEvoy, David Cooley and Conor Coad spent the week training with the Manchester City Academy. All three thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the initial feedback was very positive with all three giving a very good account of themselves and not looking at all out of place. It is a great achievement for all three players to be recognized in this way and also for the club. Well done to the three players and all the coaching staff. Bag Pack We had a four day bag pack last week in Tesco Ardkeen to help raise funds for both our impending trips to Paris at Easter and Holland in May. Both the U-12 and U-14 squads worked hard during the four days. A big special thanks to all the parents who gave their time to assist with the packing over the four days. Parents support is a vital element to fundraising and to the club. A big thanks to all who worked over the four days. Also, a special to the management of Tesco’s Ardkeen for allowing us to bag pack and help raise funds. Development Squads Well done to all our players who were involved in the various development squads recently. Waterford had a great weekend winning U-12, U-14, U-15 and U-16. We are well represented in all these squads as well as the U-11 and Kennedy Cup who are being put their paces by Tom and his staff at present.
Coaching Course
We had nine people on the FAI Kick Start 1 course held in our grounds at the weekend. Stephen Cleere, Robbie Lannon, Brian McDonald, Paul Mates, Conall O'Brien, Jack O'Shea, David McCaffrey, John Waddell and Lee Douglas attended. It is good to see so many younger coaches getting on the ladder.
Player of the Month
Congratulations to Adam Potter who won the News & Star player of the month this month. A well deserved honour. Adam follows Kenny McEvoy who was a winner last month.
