U11A League Southend 1 Villa 1 We played our first league game for 6 weeks when we played Southend in a top of the table clash last Saturday. We were a bit rusty at the start but soon started to dominate possession with Tommy Power coming close with a good effort which was cleared off the line. Southend came into the game after this and it took some good defending from Roy Butler and Craig Brown to keep the score level. During this period Darragh Collopy made some fine saves which kept us in the match at half time. We improved at the start of the 2nd half with David Hobbs on top in midfield. We had half chances with both Aaron O' Connor and Ryan Phillips coming close. James Coad then hit a shot from 20 yards which came back off the cross bar. With 10 mins to go and against the run of play Southend took the lead. Our heads did not go down and we pushed players forward in search of the equaliser. Southend nearly took advantage of this but 2 excellent saves from Darragh Collopy kept us in the game. Brian Cunningham played a ball through to James Coad and James made no mistake from 20 yards with a shot that went into the top corner much to the delight of our large group of supporters. Overall we have to sharpen our passing game and play for the full 60 mins. Man of the match went to Darragh Collopy who is benefiting from his training with Dave Phillips. The hard training is really paying off on the pitch.
Munster Junior Cup Villa 1 Carrick 2 (AET)
This was a pulsating cup tie from start to finish. We made the perfect start taking the lead after three minutes when Kevin O'Brien's superb volley was saved by the Carrick 'keeper, and Paul Omatoso followed up to score from a narrow angle. The game developed into a physical battle and no further score came until Carrick equalised in the second half. Extra time saw us under some pressure and we eventually succumbed and it is Carrick who are through to the next round.
FAI Youths Cup Wexford Youths 3 Villa 1
Our tremendous run in this competition ended on Sunday in the fabulous Wexford Youths complex. We were under significant pressure in the first half but the home side rarely threatened Craig Kelly in the goal. We had more of the game in the second half and were unlucky not to take the lead from a corner. Five minutes later another corner proved successful as Fergus McDonald came in at the back post to give us the lead. A Darren White header went narrowly over as we dominated the play at that point. As the game went on the home side showed greater fitness and levelled with 15 minutes to go and scored another two before the end to progress. It was a very determined effort but we just fell short at the end.
